To provide athletes with the necessary sport competitive skills to be
competitive at the elite levels of ski racing.
School & Sport...It's all about BALANCE!
The sport of ski racing may
conflict with traditional school programs due to the fact that competition and
training sometimes take the athlete away from regular class time. As the athlete
advances to higher levels of competition, the challenges of balancing school and
skiing increases. The challenge generally starts at the Alpine level with the
demands of extra training and competitive time being especially evident for
those athletes who qualify for national, regional and international races.
By design, our training plans are
designed to minimize the conflict with school and exams, however it is
inevitable that there will be days of school missed over the season. Full time
athletes will be absent from school for longer periods of time and must plan
ahead to compensate for the missed school time. Proactive communication of
athletic schedules is an imperative step in ensuring that teachers are aware of
the planned absences well in advance.
The following recommendations
will keep you / your racer stay ahead of the game with school work:
student and parent should meet with teachers early in the year to discuss the
ski program and the desire of the athlete to come up with a plan that allows for
success in school and in skiing;
student and parent should meet again with the individual teachers later in the
fall to provide a complete calendar of days away from school and to agree on a
strategy to stay up to speed with school work;
one to two weeks before a scheduled race series or training camp the student
should remind the teacher that he / she will be absent and agree upon how the
missed school work will be handled; and
The accountability is with the student (with the support of the parents) to
complete the missed work in the manner the teachers prefer in order to stay
current at school.
