Head Coach - Free Ride (Freestyle)
Brief info

Alastair grew up skiing at Hotham and just loves skiing. He particularly loves Freeride, Freestyle, Moguls, Skier Cross and Racing. Alastair started instructing kids at Mt Hotham in 1997 and joined teamHOTHAM as a Freestyle Coach in 2001 once he achieved his APSI Level 4 Full Certification.

Alastair coached his summer University holidays in Telluride Colorado as the Head Park and Pipe Coach and completed Bachelor of Science (Psychology) and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) at The University of Melbourne in 2005.

Alastair took the Head Freestyle Coach position at Perisher Winter Sports Club for the 2005 winter then left the ski world to work in Corporate Finance and now his families business. Alastair coached part-time between 2013 and 2018 at Mt Hotham and is looking forward to getting back involved with teamHOTHAM.

Alastair has sat on the Snow Australia Freestyle Committee since 2001 and was responsible for developing and conducting the Freestyle Coaching Certification Course.

    • Coaching Philosophy: SAFETY comes first, followed by FUN. We learn faster when we have fun. I focus on stance first, coach athletes individually and keep the group moving. The more we ski the better we ski.

    • Favourite food: Lamb roast
    • Weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten: Deep-fried spider in Mexico
    • 5 things that are always in your fridge: UDO’s Oil, eggs, bacon, spinach, tomatoes

    • Ski resort/mountain you most want to visit: Chamonix
    • Stand out race/skiing memory: Competing next to Candide Thovex at the Rip Curl Pro at Hotham in 2002 / Heliskiing in Alaska is a standout memory.
    • Milestone (Ski Racing/Coaching) Performance: Taking 4 Hotham athletes who had never been in a halfpipe to the Halfpipe and Slopestyle Junior National Champs in Perisher 2015. Came home with 1st and 2nd place in the Halfpipe Junior Nationals (1st Sam Heffernan, 2nd Tom Heffernan) with only 3 days of halfpipe training.

    • Why did you choose a career in skiing: I love skiing and facilitating that love for skiing with athletes as they progress.
